No longer homeless

Well, that went quickly. Saturday I officially moved out of my Frederiksen apartment, not knowing where I’d end up, and Monday we found the place where we’ll be living… for at least the next 11+ months. Then last night (Tuesday) we made it official by signing the lease and moving the first vanload (a bunch of my college stuff) in.

It’s a pretty nice place we have: two big bedrooms, a huge living room, two bathrooms (one in the master bedroom), and HUGE closets, including a nice-sized locked storage room right across the building hallway. The place has an elevator which is nice for moving in, since we did have to get a 2nd floor apartment. Another perk, however, is the underground parking with room for both our vehicles. The garage door is kindof like CyRide’s… hit the button from your car, drive in (or out) and it closes automatically. All in all, we’re pretty happy with the place.

Today, I’m taking a vanload of more of my stuff that had made it as far as Amanda’s apartment. Tonight we plan to try and make a 2nd trip with some of the bigger items. This weekend should hopefully involve another family member or two getting the couch, futon, and possibly bed moved, although we both kindof agreed that we don’t want to spend a night in the new place until we’re married. Kindof a … new home thing… okay, we’re just weird. Anyway… it’s pretty exciting, and pictures will be up in the gallery shortly. (Along with Becca’s first communion… sorry future sister-in-law… I’ll get to them ASAP!)

Not much left in my room… except Christmas Stuff!!!!

I suppose I should post since I haven’t in a while. I’m officially done with everything class-related. I had an Operating Systems final on Tuesday that went, in my opinion, fairly well. I spent the rest of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday getting my room completely packed up into all the crates and boxes I had left. My parents came on Thursday and we loaded up the van and cleaned the apartment. It was probably the most prepared for a move that I’ve ever been.

In the middle of loading the van, I got a surprise phone call! Without detailing too much in a public journal, I’ll just say I was finally able to go pick up some things that had been sitting in a warehouse for two and a half years!! It was like Christmas going through everything last night and seeing what I had been missing. I’ve been cataloging everything, even the big pile of CDs I’m accumulating that will be tossed. I definitely have something to keep me busy the rest of today! Unfortunately, I think I AM still missing some of my favorite country CDs… but with getting everything else back…. it’s really not that huge of a deal. One thing’s for sure… I used to spend WAAAY too much money on DVDs. This effectively tripled my current (new) DVD stash! Finally, I have my “Back to the Future” and “Short Circuit”s back! Among others…

Anyway, in other news, I officially graduate Saturday (ooh, I guess that’s tomorrow) morning. That has DEFINITELY not sunk in yet. Oh well… exciting times ahead for me!

It’s a wrap

After several days of delibrations, the verdict is in: I will be starting work at Epic Systems in Madison, WI on June 6, 2005. Now I can ramble on about all the stuff I’ve been wanting to journal about, but didn’t really want to since this is public (yeah, I know, nobody ever reads this) and I hadn’t yet made a decision. So if you want to hear all about the search and my deliberations, read on. If you want the short version… it’s just this:

I have a job finally! And I’m really looking forward to it. Busy couple of months ahead! (okay, so that last part will be in another post)

Exciting, Fun-filled March

Whew, so I guess I haven’t been updating too much over the last few weeks. And I won’t talk too much about the biggest thing going on in the last couple of weeks since I don’t quite know an answer yet…. but I’m hoping to have more information on one or two different job offers later this week. Here’s hoping….

If I really ramble on…. here’s what it’ll be on… Last week was spring break… had some good times there. The week before was midterm mayhem, but I think I pulled through that with some (hopefully) flying colors. The wedding planning is still going smoothly. We met with several different people over the last couple of weeks… sometimes getting contradicting messages, but hopefully we can sort them all out.

You know… instead of one rambling post, I think I’ll break it up…. sounds like a plan. (Entries will probably be back-dated, so if I’m reading this in the future, this post probably won’t make any sense!)

I still remember how to drive a car!

Since I’ll probably be in Ames for the next two months, this weekend was my last chance to get up to the Farley area to see Amanda’s family and get some much needed wedding planning accomplished. It was a rather strange sensation to get into my car and drive around a bit, considering I haven’t driven in almost a month…ish. Okay, so maybe not quite that long, but I certainly won’t be driving quite as much now that I’m not driving a bus. *sigh*

Random ramblings follow…

Consistent living!

Well, it’s somewhat official. It’s been one year since I moved into this new apartment. For the first time since I came to college, I have lived in the same location for twelve months. It’s been great! I’ve expanded to three desks, I have a 5.1 surround system with a perfect layout for projected movies, my keyboard is permanently set-up, and there is still enough open space in the middle of the room to pull in a couch (believe me, I’ve done it!)

I spent the last week gradually cleaning up my room, sorting and putting things away, theoretically preparing for the spring semester. Though I’m sure that within a couple weeks it’ll go back to having papers and random junk thrown everywhere, at least on the desktops. I did, however, completely clean off my main desk and slid it forward a few inches. Now I actually have room to open a textbook or notebook in front of the monitors. Immagine that! I can do homework here now!

Wow… only four months of school left. I haven’t even started this last semester, and it already seems short! I just hope I survive!

Getting over the sickness

Well, this morning I am finally getting over this crazy sickness I’ve had all week. Not fun!

Monday afternoon, with nothing to do, I sat on the couch and read up until I was supposed to go to work at 5. Having a small headache when I got up, I took an Excederin before leaving. Not 20 minutes into my shift, my stomach started feeling a little unsettled. Despite Karen’s urgings that I conserve my sick leave, I called in sick on the radio and was promptly switched out. ….I was switched out at the cardinal endpoint, not 50 feet from my apartment, but I still had to drive the bus back to base and then drive my car back home…. but that’s beside the point!

Good thing I made the call… ‘since I tried to go to bed by 7 and ended up in the bathroom throwing up and other fun stuff well past midnight. I could never get to sleep so I finally sat in the living room and tried to watch Fellowship of the Ring. I guess I did get a couple hours of sleep in. Thankfully I didn’t have anything to do on Tuesday.

I like my red car

So.. in addition to everything else that went wrong last month with my car, I developed a leak in the transmission fluid line. After being told that it would cost more than $150 to fix, I figured I could live with the quart-a-month fluid the leak drops out. Hey… I’m getting a free, albeit gradual, transmission fluid exchange!

So anyway… I bought a case of this stuff at SAM’s today and proceeded to add a quart in the parking lot. Clutzy me knocked over the half-full container, pouring fluid all down the front of my car. I got most of it wiped up… but the good news: my car is red! I meant to get to a gas station and wipe more of it off, but Ames stations started annoying me with their 5-10-cent price differences. I’ll just get gas on my way out of town tomorrow. I cleaned up the rest of the fluid at home. Hopefully it doesn’t do much damage :- .

I have brakes!

Yay! I have brakes on my car. Thanks to my dispatcher’s husband, I spent about half of what CarX wanted, plus I got a free starter!!! Er… well, once it was all said and done, I spent half as much on brakes+starter as CarX wanted for just the brakes. Okay… I’m confused now.

Anyway… This last weekend was the Iowa State Singers’ Fall Retreat. Pretty fun; met a bunch of the new people we have in choir this year. Played “I’ve Never” and landed in the middle more than a couple times. Fell over in my chair to the amusement of everyone else. Yeah! Fun times! Should be a good year with singers.

Since I’m writing this DURING CprE 585, I think I’m closer to making the decision to drop this class. I could use the $60 from the book, and who wouldn’t love three extra hours of free time in the week? Seriously, though… I can’t understand the instructor, and I’m seriously questioning how much I will use this material in my future career.

Three small paragraphs… three seperate subjects. Sweet!
