Well, that’s it. I clocked out from CyRide for the last time ever. It’s kindof sad… for the last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking things like “this is the last time I drive cardinal” or “this is the last time I pull into door 6,” etc. I had the same kindof feeling doing my final walk-through outside door 9. *sigh* oh well. It’s over.
My last shift was actually somewhat interesting. I had someone from an old class group ride and chat for about a half hour. And the annoying campus-stops-are-no-longer-free announcement actually produced some interesting comments. I didn’t really care, considering it was my last night, but I made sure to remind people to show cards in the future. I’d usually tell them it was my last night, so it wasn’t a big deal to me, which would get us talking about CyRide and my last two years yatta yatta. I did have to deal with the occasional annoying student who was yaking on a cell phone and wouldn’t pay attention to my telling them they needed to show a card, particularly in the large group heading to the basketball game. As for the whole reasoning behind the change…. after driving for 8.5 hours, I pulled in only $1 from campus stops. Woo hoo.
I also avoided one potentially deadly accident. Nighttime, someone tried to pull out of the Family video lot right in front of my bus (going down Lincoln way at 35mph). I saw it coming, though, cleared the left lane, started to pull in there, and hit the brakes when the car actually started to pull out. They stopped, I missed them, and all was well.
So as for things I never got the chance to experience: I was never rear-ended or had someone run into me while I was stopped (My definition of an “interesting” accident where it was not my fault). Partly from that one… I never got to push the tantalizing “red button” on the new digital camera systems. Which pretty much means, I never had an accident, witnessed an accident, or had an “incident” with a passenger occur on my bus. That little red button was pretty tempting to push sometimes, but I never broke the rules and pushed it just for fun. Probably some other things, but I have to run now, so maybe I’ll add more later!
Now to start being responsible and managing my time well so I’m not completely lazy/bored for those 20 hours a week I would’ve been driving had I kept my job. I have a feeling Amanda will be a big help there! 🙂
At least you got that “Last shift” thing… I don’t know if I wanted one or not, because it would have been sad, but I wish my “last driven shift” had been something better than showing up an hour late to a Sunday night shift because I was still coming into town and hadn’t remembered that I was driving.
I’ll give you a ring when I’m back in town – we can run to Welch & have a “no longer bus drivers!” beer. I’ll buy!
